On 6 July 2026, the Economic and Social Council of Greece hosted the presentation of s research conducted by students of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Law School within the framework of the Trade Law Clinic, under the academic supervision of Assistant Professor Anastasios Gourgourinis.
The event featured presentations on two highly topical issues at the intersection of international economic law and European policy.
The first presentation examined the regulation of e-commerce platforms, focusing on the cases of Shein and Temu. The research explored the challenges posed by e-commerce to the regulatory framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO), addressing issues related to dumping, state subsidies, consumer protection, and environmental sustainability.
The second presentation focused on Critical Raw Materials under WTO law. It examined the current geoeconomic challenges associated with supply chain security, the compatibility of relevant policy measures with WTO rules, and the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act.
The presentations were followed by a productive and engaging discussion with the executives of the ESC. The discussion focused on the differing approaches and strategies adopted by the European Union, China, and the United States regarding both the regulation of e-commerce and access to and governance of critical raw materials, highlighting the evolving challenges facing international trade and global economic governance.
