Το 2020 υπήρχαν 195,4 εκατομμύρια νοικοκυριά στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (ΕΕ). Σχεδόν το ένα τρίτο αυτών των νοικοκυριών (29%) είχαν παιδιά που ζούσαν μαζί τους. Περίπου το 14% των νοικοκυριών με παιδιά (7,8 εκατομμύρια νοικοκυριά) ήταν μονογονεϊκά, αντιπροσωπεύοντας το 4% του συνόλου των νοικοκυριών.

Το ποσοστό των μονογονεϊκών νοικοκυριών διαφέρει σημαντικά μεταξύ των χωρών. Εξετάζοντας το ποσοστό των μονογονεϊκών νοικοκυριών μεταξύ όλων των νοικοκυριών με παιδιά, έξι χώρες κατέγραψαν ποσοστό άνω του 20%: Σουηδία (34%), Δανία (29%), Εσθονία (28% ), Λετονία και Λιθουανία (25%) και Γαλλία (21%). Αντίθετα, τα μικρότερα ποσοστά καταγράφηκαν στην Κροατία (5%), τη Ρουμανία (7%) και τη Φιλανδία (8%).
