Το ποσοστό των «ατόμων που εγκαταλείπουν πρόωρα το σχολείο», ένας όρος που αναφέρεται σε άτομα που εγκαταλείπουν πρόωρα την εκπαίδευση και την κατάρτιση (ηλικίας 18-24 ετών), έχει μειωθεί σταθερά στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (ΕΕ) τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια (από 13,8% το 2010 σε 9,9 % το 2020).

Το 2020 περισσότεροι νεαροί άνδρες εγκατέλειψαν πρόωρα την εκπαίδευση και την κατάρτιση σε σχέση με τις γυναίκες (11,8% άνδρες και 8,0% γυναίκες). Σε σύγκριση με το 2019, το ποσοστό των ανδρών που εγκαταλείπουν πρόωρα το σχολείο παρέμεινε ίδιο, ενώ το μερίδιο των γυναικών μειώθηκε ελαφρά (κατά 0,4 ποσοστιαίες μονάδες).

Τα κράτη μέλη της ΕΕ έχουν θέσει ως στόχο να μειώσουν το ποσοστό των ατόμων που εγκαταλείπουν πρόωρα το σχολείο κάτω από 9% έως το 2030.
