Μετά από μια μείωση το 2020 και το 2021 λόγω των επιπτώσεων της πανδημίας COVID-19, ο πληθυσμός της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (ΕΕ) αυξήθηκε για δεύτερη συνεχή χρονιά, φθάνοντας από 447,6 εκατομμύρια την 1η Ιανουαρίου 2023 σε 449,2 εκατομμύρια άτομα την 1η Ιανουαρίου 2024.

Η αρνητική φυσική αλλαγή (περισσότεροι θάνατοι από γεννήσεις) υπερτερεί αριθμητικά από τη θετική καθαρή μετανάστευση. Η παρατηρούμενη αύξηση του πληθυσμού μπορεί να αποδοθεί σε μεγάλο βαθμό στις αυξημένες μεταναστευτικές μετακινήσεις μετά την COVID-19 και στην εισροή εκτοπισμένων από την Ουκρανία που έλαβαν καθεστώς προσωρινής προστασίας στις χώρες της ΕΕ.
