Ο δείκτης εξάρτησης ηλικιωμένων στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση αναμένεται να είναι στο 57% το 2100, σχεδόν διπλάσιος από αυτόν του 2019 (31%). Αυτό σημαίνει ότι θα υπάρχουν λιγότερα από δύο άτομα σε ηλικία εργασίας για κάθε ηλικιωμένο άτομο ηλικίας 65 ετών και άνω.
Η προβλεπόμενη αύξηση του δείκτη εξάρτησης ηλικιωμένων ακολουθεί την τάση που παρατηρήθηκε την τελευταία δεκαετία (26% το 2009).
