Το 2020, ο αριθμός των πραγματικών ωρών εργασίας στην κύρια εργασία στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (ΕΕ) μειώθηκε κατά 12,0% σε σύγκριση με το 2019. Αυτή η μείωση μπορεί να εξηγηθεί από τα μέτρα που ελήφθησαν για την αντιμετώπιση της πανδημίας COVID-19, η οποία οδήγησε πολλούς ανθρώπους να εναλλάσσουνπεριόδους εργασίας και περιόδους απουσίας από την εργασία το 2020. Ως αποτέλεσμα, περισσότεροι άνθρωποι εργάστηκαν λιγότερες ώρες από το συνηθισμένο και απουσίαζαν από τη δουλειά τους.

Σε εθνικό επίπεδο, σημειώθηκε μείωση των ωρών εργασίας σε όλα τα κράτη μέλη.

Οι υψηλότερες μειώσεις καταγράφηκαν για την Ελλάδα (-19,7%), την Ισπανία (-19,5%), την Πορτογαλία και την Ιταλία (και οι δύο -19,0%).

Οι χώρες της ΕΕ όπου υπήρξε μικρή αλλαγή στις ώρες εργασίας (με μείωση κάτω του 5%) ήταν η Φιλανδία (-4,4%), η Δανία και το Λουξεμβούργο (και οι δύο -4,1%) και οι Κάτω Χώρες (-3,2%).
