Το 2019 υπήρχαν 2,0 εκατομμύρια δάσκαλοι (85% γυναίκες, 15% άνδρες) και 24,5 εκατομμύρια μαθητές σε επίπεδο πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης στα κράτη μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (ΕΕ). Τα παιδιά εισέρχονται συνήθως σε προγράμματα πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης μεταξύ 5 και 7 ετών.

Στην ΕΕ, ο μέσος αριθμός μαθητών ανά δάσκαλο σε επίπεδο πρωτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης μειώθηκε ελαφρά από 13,6 το 2018 σε 13,5 το 2019. Τα χαμηλότερα ποσοστά καταγράφηκαν στην Ελλάδα (8,7), στο Λουξεμβούργο (9,0) και στην Πολωνία (9,6).
