Η ενέργεια για θέρμανση και ψύξη αντιπροσωπεύει σχεδόν το 50% της συνολικής ακαθάριστης τελικής κατανάλωσης ενέργειας της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (ΕΕ).

Για το 2021, η ακαθάριστη κατανάλωση όλων των καυσίμων αυξήθηκε κυρίως λόγω της οικονομικής ανάκαμψης μετά την άρση των περιορισμών για την COVID-19. Ως αποτέλεσμα, το μερίδιο των ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας στην ακαθάριστη τελική κατανάλωση για σκοπούς θέρμανσης και ψύξης μειώθηκε κατά 0,1 ποσοστιαίες μονάδες (pp), από 23,0% το 2020 σε 22,9% το 2021. Πρόκειται για σχεδόν διπλάσια τιμή από το 2004 (11,7%).

Οι εξελίξεις στον βιομηχανικό τομέα, τις υπηρεσίες και τα νοικοκυριά (συμπεριλαμβανομένης της ηλεκτροδότησης της θέρμανσης με τη χρήση αντλιών θερμότητας) συνέβαλαν στην ανάπτυξη των ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας στη θέρμανση και την ψύξη.

Μεταξύ των κρατών μελών της ΕΕ, η Σουηδία ξεχώρισε με περισσότερα από τα δύο τρίτα (68,6%) της ενέργειας που χρησιμοποιήθηκε για θέρμανση και ψύξη το 2021 να προέρχονται από ανανεώσιμες πηγές (κυρίως βιομάζα και αντλίες θερμότητας), ακολουθούμενη από την Εσθονία (61,3%), τη Λετονία (57,4%) και τη Φινλανδία (52,6%).
